Perception Vs. Reality

Most of us yearn to be liked, whether it’s by our friends or family, colleagues, or even by the absolute strangers we have on social media.

But why do we allow a need for acceptance to persuade our better judgement?

Our decision-making process as humans, is to factor in how the result of our actions will impact other people’s perception of you. But can that make us stale and stagnant in our personal development?

To quote a man who went against the grain (Rupaul Charles),

“what other people think of you, is none of your business”

And never truer words have been spoken.

How often do we make decisions based on what others may perceive of us? Is our perception from others more important than our own desires and values?

The answer isn’t clear cut, nor is it a simple one. In a world where social media reputation (for most) is vital, we can find ourselves governed by a false avatar we allow the world to see.

I ask you this, what would you do different if every connection you have were supportive? What could you achieve if no one passed judgement?

I’m not oblivious to reality. People will always be there to judge you, put you down and criticize you and your actions. But for every ‘Negative Nancy’, there is another, who is your supporter.

We waste so much time trying to manipulate those with negative opinions of us into a positive light, and we forget to focus on those who are already there, being our biggest champions.

Reality is, we should be spending more time nurturing relationships with those who will support us unconditionally, than worry about those who don’t.

Something I’ve learnt through many a mistake, is that positivity invites positivity. You can change people’s perception of you by simply staying true to who you are.

Be a symbol for hope and light for those who would rather lurk in the shadows. You just never know who is watching, and how powerful your courage can be for someone who would normally avoid ‘the road less travelled’.

Until next time readers, Stay True to You!
