I am not a stranger to the dark

I am not a stranger to the dark

A sentence from an empowering song has resounded with me for the better part of this year.

I’ve had a couple things go pear shaped this year. And a handful of wonderful things to be thankful for.

Recent events have really awoken me to the things that are truly important in life.

Life is short, and we don’t get a say when our time (or those we love) is up.

Why am I talking mortality?

Whilst we may not get a say on who goes when, we do get to make the most of the time we have here.

What’s even more powerful, is that we can be the light for someone when all they see is darkness.

Mental illness is more common than we like to admit. But, it does not make those affected any weaker or less ‘together’ than the next person.

In fact it’s a sign of strength, and if you can identify those dark thoughts then you have the ability to rationalise with them.

We all have our own issues, our own insecurities, and our own obstacles we must face. Whilst the common word is that we “don’t need to go it alone”, we can also find peace and perspective within, from being there for someone else.

So many times when I’m battling my own anxieties and overwhelming emotions, i come across someone whos light seems almost out. Supporting them and being an ear or voice in their moment of need, can bring you something incredible. A sense of Need or Purpose.

For me, it’s a selflessly selfish act, that gives me enough fuel to continue my life’s work, and ultimately, the drive to continue to battle through my own challenges.

Whilst I’ve always strived to be a career man, I am a carer first and foremost. Compassion is something that inspires me, and lifting up another’s soul can give you something money nor success ever can.

“Humility doesn’t come easy, but honesty does, and thats half the battle”

If you make just one person smile with you each day, you’ve already made someone’s day, and most likely your own too.

Our memories are made up of emotions.

Interactions with people may consist of words and gestures. Over time the words fade, but you never forget how you felt in those moments.

I like to be remembered by others by the way I’ve made them feel. And it’s exactly how I remember people too.

When you feel welcomed, respected or loved, you feel powerful in their presence.

So imagine if you made others feel that way too? They don’t need to be anyone important to you. But, if you can bring a smile to a strangers face, just imagine what you are doing for those you love and cherish.

As I approach my 30’s I’ve come to realise that it’s okay to not be okay.

So my door, ears, and heart is open, whenever, whatever.

Don’t ever let pride stand in your way from reaching out.

Remember, it starts with a smile 🙂

The black dog might be strong, but we are stronger when we stand together. #handsout
