What’s stopping you from your ambitions?
A reoccurring thought i’ve been struggling with lately, is the feeling that my life over the past 12 months, has lacked direction. A purpose if you will.
Events that have unfolded this year have left me feeling bitter, detached, defeated, and somewhat frozen of late.
It’s a sense of ‘Pause’.
Whilst I can recognise when I’m in a rut, this time feels quite unique. Like walking through Central Park for the first time without a map, it’s quite easy to lose your sense of direction.
It’s not specifically a negative thing. Past experiences have taught me that sometimes defeat holds more value in terms of personal growth than success.
The journey is almost always more important than the destination. But it’s in those moments we can start to doubt ourselves. We start to question our ability to find the right path.
But who determines what is the right path for you?
Realistically speaking, most of us have ambitions, (whether we admit it or not) for something greater than ‘what is’ right now. They usually are made up of desires we wish to see for ourselves. These aren’t selfish thoughts, or delusions of grandeur for that matter. They are simply what most of us call ‘dreams’. or some ‘visions of unrealistic attainment’.
But why do we view our dreams, as something we will never have?
Why do we question our ability to pursue those dreams?
And why are we afraid to admit that we long for more?
Fear of failure? Rejection? Others perceptions perhaps?
Or maybe, just maybe, we are afraid of what it takes to succeed.
Jim Rohn famously said; “We are a the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with.”
It’s only natural that we can easily be influenced by what those people desire for us.
I took this little get away to reconnect with myself, and confirm my desires outside of my day to day influences/influencers.
To no surprise, the same desires I long for, are still there even after the noise stops.
Great! I’ve got a clear picture, but how do I get there?
If you’re like me, having being burnt by others actions, or perhaps even your own, you tend to move forward, taking calculated risks. You think a thought through to the nitty gritty and one thing that always seems to take most of my thought process, is how would ‘x’ and ‘y’ perceive me if I did this? How would they feel?
This is where we get it so wrong.
This is where we are NOT true to ourself.
This is where defeat emerges. Before even having tried.
Things I’m still learning to do, but hope to achieve with a healthy balance;
-Saying NO confidently without worrying about others’ perception
-Putting MY needs above others’
-NEVER compromise my values – no matter how uncomfortable that may be to attain
-Staying in my own lane (stop comparing what others are doing around me)
-Not everything broken, needs to be fixed
-Be unapologetic of my individuality
-Transparency
I’m sure a few of you will resonate with some of the above statements. Perhaps we hold a similar call to action?
Whilst we are all individuals, unique in our own way, we all have some kind of yearning for acceptance.
So perhaps that acceptance comes from within first?
When we learn to confidently embrace ourselves, who we are, and our core values, we are able to build a strong transparent brand.
Thats where I believe the first step of the journey towards our dreams will take shape.
“Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.”
– Napoleon Hill
Don’t let failure limit your success, let failure be the road map towards it.
