Social media, a powerful tool or a powerful hindrance?

There are legitimate arguments on both sides, but whatever the reason you utilise the platform, there will come a point where it interferes with your perception of somebody or something.
How many times have you clicked on an Instagram page and noticed 100k followers and immediately assumed “tosser?”
And yet you follow them anyway…
And on the other end, how many times have you clicked on someone who has a couple hundred followers and assumed, “this person must not be that interesting?”
Whether you want to admit it or not, we are all guilty to a degree.
Whatever platform you use, it can be a great way to communicate and stay in touch with loved ones, friends, or even create connections randomly.
However, it can also create a false sense of immediate validation, that can bring us a temporary high, and then only hours later, slump our self esteem down further below than before.
Sound familiar?
That’s right, like a comedown from a ‘trip’ that a substance abuser goes through, the grasp of social media is very real, and none of us are immune to it.
I am no exception to the above statements, infact I’m probably worse. Seeking validation from my words, photos, my travel or my fitness waves.
So what am I doing about it? Well firstly, acknowledging it. The next steps are yet to be discovered.
The bests and worst parts of me, and who I strive to be, will never be found on my facebook, Instagram or even my writing. It’s found in person. Face to face contact.
Why? Words can be misinterpreted just like pictures can be suggestive.
I wrote a little while back, the importance of self-validation and “if you caught eyes with yourself, would you be welcomed by your reflection?”. The truth in that is that we can often be mislead to think our online persona is a true reflection ourselves. But if we are being honest with ourselves, it’s only an excerpt of moments of our life. Or an angle of a moment we felt self-empowerment.
Sometimes in life, we get caught up evaluating our own accomplishments and build a false pretense of expectations from what we ‘scroll’ through. Those people you compare yourself to have their own struggles between those moments that you will never see.
We are all in this journey of life together, and it’s important to not compare your path to anothers. We all have our own crossroads at different points. Don’t be too focused on someone elses journey that you forget to take notice of where your own lane leads you.

I love reading your words. It feels like you’re chatting over a cup of tea! So true and humble. Thank you for taking the time.
Please continue sharing your thoughts, and words, not because of any reason except it’s nice to read, and may help someone sitting at home by a computer or on their phone to pull themselves back into reality for what life is….. a flow of ups and downs. No one gets a free ride so most definitely everyone has their struggles in between the smiling Facebook and instagram posts. It’s when we share them and our humanity that we all get through. Love you darling… you’re awesome!!! Xxx
